Wire Fraud Warning

Wire fraud is one of the most common and costly scams in real estate transactions. Fraudsters may send emails appearing to be from your title company, escrow officer, real estate agent, or attorney with instructions to wire funds to a different account.

Protect yourself:

  • • Never send funds based solely on emailed wire instructions.
  • • Always verify wiring instructions by phone using a trusted, known number. Do not use phone numbers from the same email.
  • • If you receive an email with updated wiring instructions, call your settlement agent immediately at a number you know is correct.
  • • Be suspicious of urgent or last-minute changes to wiring instructions.
  • • Confirm receipt of funds with your settlement agent after wiring.

If you believe you have been the victim of wire fraud, contact your bank immediately and file a report with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov.
